Living in 60 Square Feet and Radical Freedom

I haven't blogged in a few months because I've been enjoying having my son home and making some big changes in our lives. We've moved and settled into a much more liberal area for the time being. I've also been busy getting our lives back to normal and catching up with friends and family.

I wrote last year about our plan to homeschool while traveling full-time but we were derailed by a few especially vile people.

Not to worry, it takes more than that to keep us down for long. Despite ending our fundraising campaign early I was able to take the $2,000 we did raise and purchase a {smaller and older} camper for us to renovate and travel in.

Our super awesome 60 square foot vintage travel trailer!
After driving a few I realized that an RV was a bit unwieldy for me and the cost would mean no fun DIY renovation. This trailer is super light {easily towed with a car or mini-van} and we got it for a steal with plenty left over to customize it to our needs.

The interior makes the potential a little harder to see but...

The place where the previous owners slept. On a mattress of course.
The spot where the kitchen should be but clearly isn't.
Wheeeeee!

So far we've had the pleasure of ripping out all of the random built-ins and painting. Next up is fixing the {very weird and haphazard} wiring job and installing the floors.

Here's what I expect it to look like when I'm done:

Hardwood floors, compost toilet, hand pump sink built in storage closet and sleeping bunks...

Nothing too ambitious, eh?

Eventually {once I can afford it} we'll go completely off grid by installing a solar power system. The toilet {compost}, shower {solar camp shower} and sink {convertible hand pump system for plugging in at campgrounds and using stored water when boondocking} should make the transition pretty easy.

And for the naysayers who think living in 60 sq ft is crazy/stupid/IMPOSSIBLE, check out these peeps who've already done it.

What I Did Saturday...

I made these elbow length fingerless mitts! Took ALL day (8 hours) but it was time well spent. Now that I've got a pattern created I've added them to the shop!

Much Needed Mini Vacation

We haven't been to the beach in YEARS, since we moved to North Carolina actually. My son has always loved the sand so I jumped at the opportunity when a friend of a friend invited us to their family beach house for the holiday weekend.

The weather was nice and the company was even better. I'm so glad we went. My son got so excited the first day he exclaimed, "mom, I didn't know there was a giant sandbox with an ocean in it!" My heart melted.

Maybe when we move we'll find somewhere on the coast to settle. For now we've got some amazing memories.

Namaste,
Ani
